Almost every child in a school class knows what it’s like to sit on a question and not ask it for fear of appearing foolish in front of their peers. The workplace is often equally constraining for adults, and questioning the norm is not commonplace. However, Matt Parker was both curious and bold enough to do so, and this remarkable transformation in the men’s Team Pursuit performance followed. Three principles drove this remarkable change in performance:
Successful innovators reject received wisdoms and traditions to challenge the norm. Never automatically accept the status quo and existing constraints in your environment.
Smart innovations are kindled from asking courageous questions. Successful innovators start by asking simple and fundamental questions like: how do we go faster? How can we do this better?
Innovation is brought to fruition with fearless and disciplined decision-making. Innovation should not be confused with gambling on a long shot. Questions need to be answered with rigour, and success follows courageous decision-making, calculated planning, and specific execution. Transformative change does not happen on a whim: the men’s TP team would not have succeeded if Ed Clancy had not been prepared to reinvent himself and persevere.
